Silver Plating Process for  Oil & Gas Applications

Silver plating remains a critical surface engineering solution for components operating in demanding industrial environments. At our Aberdeen facility, we deliver precision silver electroplating for Oil & Gas applications throughout the North Sea sector.

1. Receipt & Inspection

Components are logged, photographed, and assessed against customer specifications and coating requirements. Dimensional checks and surface condition analysis determine preparatory treatment parameters.

Full traceability documentation begins at this stage, ensuring every component can be tracked throughout the process.

2. Surface Preparation — Shot Blasting

Controlled shot blasting removes surface oxides, scale, and contaminants while creating an anchor profile essential for coating adhesion.

Media selection and blast parameters are tailored to substrate material and component geometry, ensuring optimal preparation for silver deposition.

3. Electroplating — Cyanide Silver Bath

Components are submerged in our temperature-controlled cyanide plating bath. Precise DC current density and bath chemistry parameters deposit a uniform silver layer of specified thickness (typically 5–50 microns depending on application).

Real-time monitoring ensures coating consistency across complex geometries, with full bath chemistry records maintained for traceability.

4. Quality Control & Certification

Coating thickness is verified via XRF or eddy current testing. Adhesion is assessed per ISO 2819. Surface finish and coverage are inspected visually and under magnification.

As a BSI ISO 9001:2015 certified facility, we provide comprehensive processing documentation and certification with every order.

Applications

  • High-temperature fasteners and threaded components requiring anti-galling properties
  • Electrical contacts and switchgear for offshore installations
  • Bearing surfaces requiring low friction coefficients
  • Sealing surfaces on valves and connectors exposed to sour gas environments
  • Components requiring excellent electrical conductivity in demanding conditions

Silver plating offers exceptional conductivity, corrosion resistance in non-sulphide environments, and anti-galling properties critical for threaded assemblies in subsea and topside applications.

Our Aberdeen facility handles both small-batch prototype work and volume production runs, with turnaround times aligned to offshore maintenance schedules.
